Cempejack Kuching is a hybrid between cempedak (Artocarpus integer) and jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). Unlike many so-called “cempejacks” that are just soft-fleshed jackfruits, this is the real cross: the fruit shape, skin, and intense aroma are unmistakably cempedak, while the tree’s young leaves and buds only show the slight hairiness while cempedak is very hairy and jackfruits have smooth leaves. The flesh is deep golden-yellow, very sweet like a cempedak, but with added juiciness and a floral-fruity fragrance coming from the jackfruit side. The result is a perfect balance: rich fruity sweetness with cempedak aroma.
